A Journey Off the Beaten Path
Holden Village is a nonprofit, tight-knit community nestled in the middle of the Cascades. The village consists of 10 larger buildings with 14 chalet buildings for housing, all of which had been there since the town was used as lodging for miners. Faber was brought onto the project during the early stages to design a multi-use facility where the community could learn about the village's history, participate in daily classes, relax on the large deck, or unwind at the firepits.
To access the village, visitors must arrive at Lake Chelan, board a ferry, then board a bus that takes them up a service road. Since this project was uniquely remote, proper coordination, planning, and logistics were essential for the success of this facility. From the beginning, Holden Village had a strict budget which meant target value design was imperative. Faber set out to design the scope that met all their requirements, while adding to scope if the project came in under budget.
To become properly prepared, Faber also had to be aware of every sub involved, each material needed, and the number of trips taken throughout the process. Due to the complexity and budget restrictions of this build, it took 3 years to conceptualize and design. Through meticulous planning and designing, the 4 year design phase set Faber up for an 8-week construction schedule, completing the project before the winter months and snow arrive.
